[2013] The salmon run is one of the largests and most fascinating animal migrations of the world. Every year, adult salmon return to their place of birth after spending several years in the ocean. They migrate back to the rivers, upstream, which is a huge effort. 2 out of 400 salmons will succeed in reaching the gravel beds where they will spawn. After spawning, most Atlantic salmon die and the life cycle starts over again. Bears are very aware of the migration and are there to eat salmon abundantly to prepare for the hibernation period. The photo is taken at Katmai National Park, Alaska; the bear is aware of the fish jumping over the waterfall.
